Data ELI5 handles
- Selected text and images. ELI5 processes only content you explicitly ask it to explain. The built-in local model processes it on your Mac. If you choose a cloud provider, ELI5 sends it directly to that provider under its terms.
- API keys. Keys you enter are stored locally in the browser profile or macOS Keychain and sent only to the provider you selected.
- Settings and history. Preferences and recent explanations stay locally on your device until you clear them or remove ELI5.
What ELI5 does not do
ELI5 has no developer-operated prompt server. It contains no analytics, advertising, tracking, fingerprinting, or data-selling code. The developer does not receive or retain your selected content, images, keys, or explanation history.
Permissions
Browser storage saves local settings and history. The context menu starts explanations. Active-tab access captures only the visible image you explicitly invoke ELI5 on. Native messaging connects the browser extension to the separate ELI5 Mac app when you choose its local model. Accessibility lets the Mac app read selected text; Screen Recording is requested only when you choose image-region OCR.
